Protective helmets and their uses
Protective helmets also known as safety helmets, hard hats are part of the PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) range which is law in the UK when working in dangerous environments.
PPE means equipment's that is designed to be worn or held by a user at work which helps protect them against risks to their health and safety, PPE should only be used as a last resort to reduce the risk of danger however steps should be taken before hand to ensure less hazards are open before work if started.
Safety helmets is one of the most frequently used item in PPE and will protect the users head against:
◆ Impact from falling objects
◆ Hitting dangerous objects
◆ Depending on the hard hat, lateral forces
◆ Flames, molten metal, electric shocks and high temperatures, also dependant on the hard hat.
Hard hats are used in many environments such as forestry, mining, power and construction to reduce the risk of head injury. The majority of injuries are those of physical injuries, which in most cases are a result of a falling object striking the head of the user, hence why safety helmets are law within the UK. There are many types of helmets available and which depend on the level of protection given to the user such as heat resistance.
